1. Description of the Organization

Fares Al Arab for Development & Charity Works is a nongovernmental / nonprofit organization established since 2006. The idea of establishment comes from a group of youths who believe in charity and relief works and its role in raising & building the community. The organization, through its strategic plans, could contribute in developing and supporting the Palestinian community by implementing a series of projects & activities.

Fares Al Arab seeks to participate in raising the status of developmental & charitable works in the Gaza Strip through the implementation of development and social charity programs.

Gaza Strip lives an exceptional circumstances with ongoing  blockade and facing three wars within five years need an immediate responses and emergency & relief activities which is considered as one of the main priorities in Fares Al-Arab programs and interventions. Mitigating the impact of shocks and providing emergency relief are included in the strategic programs implemented through the relief and emergency program. Fares Al-Arab has a variety of supporting units and departments such as procurement, logistics, media, finance, human resources and internal auditing, which assist in the implementation of various programs and activities.

  1. Gaza Crisis

Gaza Strip forms an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory.Gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth, with a total area of 365 km2 (45 km long, 2-5 km wide), a population of over 1.8 million and a population growth of 3.37%.

The war on the Gaza Strip on 2014 has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis. The damages caused by this war far exceed the destruction caused by the previous two wars on 2008 and 2012, with significant civilian causalities, widespread destruction of civilian buildings and infrastructure throughout the Strip and massive displacement of people. All geographic areas of Gaza were affected by the conflict and destroying Gaza’s economy completely including the economic facilities left which were considered the base of the economy in Gaza.

The conflict and ten years of blockade, and more than 20 years of movement restrictions have taken their toll on Palestinians living in Gaza. Social services, including health and education, are overstretched by historical weaknesses and new losses. Poverty, food insecurity, and social vulnerability have rocketed as a result of the mass displacement and destruction of the population. Many households in Gaza can no longer live without external assistance, putting additional pressure on the social protection system.

The on-going energy crisis is another challenge that faces the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip, resulting in devastating effects on the water, sanitation and hygiene and health sector.

Due to its densely populated and largely urban environment, all people in Gaza were exposed to the conflict and suffered from damages to vital infrastructure. The infrastructure destruction has left a large number of the Gazan people without food, water, shelters, electricity, and/or medical services.

  1. Political Economy of Gaza

Gaza Strip has been facing many political changes since 2006.  A recent report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) states “…even before the latest military operations, Gaza’s local economy was in a state of total collapse,” and “the consequences will be grave for the Palestinian people and their economy.”

Since 2007 and following the blockade imposed by Israel, the situation in the Strip has been one of chronic need, re-development and donor dependency, despite a temporary relaxation of restrictions on movement of people and goods since 2010.

The blockade has effectively cut off access for exports to traditional markets, transfers to the West Bank and has severely restricted imports. Exports are now down to 2% of 2007 levels.

Adding to this, the majority of the Gaza population has lost its productive assets. According to the Palestinian Federation of Industries, 419 businesses and workshops were damaged, with 128 completely destroyed. With limited activity at the commercial crossings and extensive damage to private infrastructure and other productive assets,

The previously mentioned political circumstances did not only affect the economy but also had a disastrous impact on the social life of the people living in Gaza. The studies show an increase in the rate of divorce as a result of the deteriorating economic situation where the husbands are not able to provide the needs of their families and children. At the same time, the results show that the number of girls not getting married is increasing since men are unable to find work opportunities and thus unable to have the marriage expenses which lead them (men) to get married late.

As a result, to the low standards of living, lack of job opportunities and the absence of solutions for their problems, young people in Gaza started using drugs. Many indicators show an increase in the level of drug use in Gaza, especially Tramadol, not only by men but also by women. Even educated people became victims to drug use since they want to run away from their bad reality.

  1. Social Crisis

The economic crisis has badly hit and affected the social structure. The impact can be seen in the following:

Consequences of the above situations imply that urgent interventions need to be taken to support the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip.
